UCL - Torrington Place
London
When working at John Robertson Architects (2013-2018)
While working at JRA as the Executive Architect for UCL – Torrington Place project, I led the comprehensive refurbishment of the 1-19 Torrington Place building, located within University College London’s Bloomsbury campus. Our team transformed the entrance, reception area, and multiple teaching and learning spaces across the ground and lower ground floors, significantly enhancing the building’s functionality and modernizing its facilities. This project delivered the largest volume of high-quality, centrally bookable teaching spaces on the Bloomsbury campus.
The refurbishment featured a newly designed communal lobby with cluster tables and booth-style soft seating, alongside seven new classrooms: two large rooms accommodating over 50 students each, and five smaller rooms for up to 20 students. We also introduced a Technology-Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) room to support media-rich, collaborative learning, three 120-person lecture theaters, and a multifunctional teaching room for up to 16 people with flexible configurations. Recessed soft seating areas were added outside the main teaching spaces for casual use, creating inviting and accessible environments for all.
In my role, I drove improvements to the base design, elevating it into high-quality, functional spaces, and produced full construction documentation for the contractor. Leading a team of five, I coordinated between UCL’s client, design, and delivery teams, ensuring quality standards and university legal requirements were met throughout the project.
